Dr. Nancy Allen is an Professor of Biological Sciences at Howard College, Big Spring, Texas. She currently consults in curriculum development and digital equity issues with the University of North Texas, Arizona State University, Portland State University, and the Smithonian's National Museum of the American Indian. Formerly, she was coordinator of the Middle Grades Teacher Education Program and Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Culture at Texas A&M University. She has a Ph.D. in science education. Her research interests have focused on the use of technology with multicultural populations. She was the curriculum specialist for the Four Directions Challenge in Technology Project, a six year, six million dollar project in which 19 Native American schools and four universities worked collaboratively with parents, elders, and students to create culturally-relevant education through technology. She has been the curriculum director at twelve summer institutes for teachers of Native Americans. She has also served as science consultant, instructional designer, and curriculum expert on numerous technology projects, including the EcoExpert series in environmental education the SALUT Project, a collaboration among Texas Learning Technology Group and twenty-nine Texas school districts for the production of CD ROM based science instruction for limited English proficient students. She received the 1996 National Association for Research in Science Teaching Outstanding Paper Award for her presentation, "Voices from the Bridge: Kickapoo Middle School Students and Science Education-A Worldview Comparison." Dr. Allen has served as a curriculum consultant for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and numerous tribal schools and colleges and as a member of the National Digital Equity Committee for the US Department of Education's Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers in Technology Project. She is co-editor and co-author of Toward Digital Equity: Bridging the Divide in Education (Allyn & Bacon, 2003), and co-author of the Teacher Edition that accompanies the volume. Dr. Allen also participated in the preparation of UNESCO's volume Information and Computer Technology in Teacher Education, A Planning Guide (Khvilon, E., Patru, M., Resta, P., Semenov, A., 2003). |
